Let me preface this by saying ****BEAN AND I ARE TOTALLY OK AND THERE IS NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT!**** Now that's out of the way, here's our adventure to L&D
Well, we have officially made our first trip to Labor and Delivery last night. Wasn't for our hospital tour we have scheduled either.
I have been having some achy sore pains for the last few days, mostly when Bean moves. They are usually pretty low, and I didn't think anything of it. Then last night I had the same pains, more intense and lasted about an hour straight! SCARY! So, call the on call Dr, who thought it was Braxton Hicks contractions (Bean was happily moving around during all of this), but still wanted me to go in and get checked out just to make sure and be safe. So, off we went to Labor and Delivery at about 9:30.
Of course, I am super stressed out at this point, and we walk into the hospital (not knowing where labor and delivery is, since WE HAVEN'T HAD OUR HOSPITAL TOUR YET!) and the visiting hours just ended and there is a security guard at the front counter. There are two people talking to her asking her to call up to a room. We politely say "excuse me" to the lady on the phone (I'm currently having pretty strong contractions at this point and VERY uncomfortable to say the least) trying to ask where we go for Labor and Delivery. We say "excuse me" a few more times (keep in mind we are less than 2 feet away from the lady). Finally F speaks up and says loudly "EXCUSE ME! WE NEED TO GO TO LABOR AND DELIVERY" and she continues to ignore us and talk on the phone. The poor people she is calling for are totally freaked out for me because the woman looks at me in fear and asks "are you in labor?" to which I reply, "lets hope not, but I need to get checked out". So then She starts trying to get the lady at the front counter's attention as well. To which she is still getting no response. Finally F and I say forget it and start walking to the elevators. As soon as we pass her sign that says "visiting hours over" she pays attention and says "Stop! Where are you going? You need to come back here and wait your turn!" To which F starts to get really pissed and said "we were trying to get your attention and you were ignoring us, we are going to Labor and Delivery" to which she says "well you need to wait your turn, and then possibly go to admissions, etc...." To which I look at her and yell/cry (Hey, I'm freaked out and in pain at this point, deal with it lady) "I'm having contractions and I'm in pain and you couldn't answer us when we ALL tried to get your attention, so I'M NOT WAITING!" and walked off... So she yelled after us "Fine. I will call and let them know you are on your way" as if it was some sort of threat...Go ahead and try us lady! She didn't have a clue who she was messing with. Don't mess with the scared hormonal pregnant chick, or a pissed off Daddy F.
So we get up to L&D (found it without the hospital tour and everything...good thing I paid attention to my paper work that said its on the second floor) and went to the nurses station. They IMMEDIATELY got me in a room and hooked me up to the monitors. F relayed our story about how horrible the rent a cop was at the front counter to the nurse supervisor, and she wasn't too happy about that, but they were all SUPER nice. So my nurse (who I LOVED) told me she would be back in 15-20 min to check on the monitors (at this point I didn't know they were contractions). They had the heart beat turned way up, so we could hear Bean's heartbeat going like crazy and the few random kicks he was doing to the monitor which was LOUD. The nurse literally came back 5 min later and said "you are definitely contracting, I am calling the Dr" To which I just start crying (um, 31 weeks is WAAAAY too soon for this to be happening) and F did an AWESOME job of calming me down. So the nurse came in a few min later and gave me a shot of stuff to try and stop the contractions and then they did a bunch of other tests. About another hour or so went by and the contractions slowed down, but hadn't gone away, and were still significant enough that they were still somewhat painful (not as painful as before, but still), so I got ANOTHER shot of meds to stop the contractions in the other arm. For a wuss who HATES needles, that actually didn't hurt...the medicine sure burned though!
We waited another hour or so, and the contractions slowed even more, but never completely went away according to the monitor. Bean was still going crazy the whole time, and the nurse came in and said they were still waiting on one last test (all the others came back completely normal) that shows if you are at risk for pre-term labor and wouldn't be able to discharge me until they got that test back. So, we waited some more. Finally the nurse came in just to check on us and was looking at the monitors for awhile and then she says "He has not stopped moving the entire time you have been here! I have never seen a baby so constantly active...does he ever rest?" Nope. He doesn't. he is constantly moving and going crazy. She just looked at me and was like "good luck, I have a feeling you will need it. If he's like that inside, it will take him about a month on the outside to break that habit" Thanks. She's the second medical person wishing us luck on a difficult hyper kid. She was nice enough to turn the chair into a bed for F, and I was finally able to relax enough to get a little sleep.
Sure enough, as soon as we both got to sleep she came in and told me the pre-term labor test came back fine and we were all clear to go. She said she didn't know why I was having the contractions, could be any number of things (lack of sleep, dehydration, stress, the baby moving, doing too much, lifting heavy things, etc) so to just take it easy for the next day and see how it goes. She also gave me a number to labor and delivery to call to talk to a nurse who is there so they can give advice over the phone vs having the on call Dr paged and call back, etc. The nurse was sooo nice, and she was like "It was so nice meeting you, now I don't want to see you for 2ish more months, but hope to see you then!". Thanks, I hope I don't have to go back until we are coming back with bean all nice and fully cooked. Someone told me you aren't getting close to having a kid without at least one false alarm trip to Labor and Delivery. Lets hope this was our first and our last!
And yes, I will be calling to complain about the horrible rent-a-cop at the front counter.
