I had my first official Dr's appointment on Monday. I am finally 10 weeks. At the appointment (which took FOREVER!) F and I got to hear the heartbeat for the first time. It was AMAZING! The midwife says the heart rate was between 160-170 beats per minute. She actually told us it would probably be difficult (if not impossible to hear) since I have a tilted uterus. She said if we got to hear it, that we need to go out and by a lottery ticket, because the chances were that slim. Luckily Bean cooperated and she found it right off the bat! I then got to schedule my next appointment for November 30th at 14 weeks with my actual Dr (who I LOVE) and we will have our first ultrasound. Actually it will TECHNICALLY be our second ultrasound.
F and I have talked about it and there are some genetic tests that can be done (blood draw/ultrasounds) to check for things like Tay Sachs, Spina Bifida, and Downs Syndrome. The midwife highly suggested we have these tests, because since I am part Ashkanazi Jew, I am at a much higher risk for these (along with the breast cancer gene, but I have already ruled that out via my mom who has been tested). We have an NT scan that is scheduled for November 16th where they do an ultrasound to measure part of the Neural Tube for Downs Syndrome and things like that. I have heard we get to see the ultrasound, but probably won't hear anything for awhile (I just hope its not that long of a wait for results). I have decided I want to go into this appointment optomistic and look at it as a way we get to see Bean sooner and for peace of mind that the heart is beating and everything looks somewhat normal (minus finding out the results). I honestly don't think there will be anything wrong (no history on my side of the family or F's, so chances are low). So, wish us luck!
