After getting off work at 6 am Wednesday May 12th to start my maternity leave, I was focused on nothing more than getting my hair done later that afternoon, finishing up a few things before the baby got here, and getting some sleep! I was hoping he would hold out at least until the end of the week at the very least. On the way home I got into a very minor accident on my way home (I have never gotten in an accident in my entire life!). I was going less than 10 miles per hour, and caused minor damage to my car. I completely freaked out, because (after never having been in an accident) I had just been in an accident, I had our car seat in the car (has to be replaced now that its been in an accident), I hit my knee, and the guy was not getting out of his car and was holding his head (he drove a tiny little miata with a huge roll bar inside). So, I call 911, and give them all the details, I tell them who I am (because my mom works at the department I tell them who she is and to tell her I am ok, since I KNEW everyone would be calling her telling her I was in an accident) and that I am 9+ months pregnant, but ok. I thought I might have hit my belly, but it didn't hurt too bad, and the baby was moving, I was just more worried about the guy in the other car holding his head and not getting out of his car! I get out of the car and my car is leaking fluid bad! So, needless to say everyone and there brother was on the way. I immediately call my mom and tell her I am ok, and she had about 3 other people tell her I was in an accident before I got a chance to call.
The first officer there was actually one of F and I's good friends, so that was reassuring. I ended up having 4 patrol officers, 3 motorcycle officers, and a CSO. Not to mention the Fire truck, and the ambulance. I was already upset about being in the accident, but the huge response just threw me over the edge. SOOO embarrassing (especially since I knew all of them. I now owe them cookies big time...not to mention the coffee I interrupted). I was originally going to go to L&D to get checked out on my own (I really felt fine) after the accident, but one of the motor officers yelled at me and made me get transported. So, off I went to the hospital in the ambulance. F and I's friend called F and told him I had been in an accident, but was OK, and being transported just as a precaution. The ambulance driver got lost on the way to the hospital. SERIOUSLY! My mom was having to give him directions (she was sitting in the front seat). We ended up in residential areas going over speed bumps and having the ride take about 10 min longer than normal (would have been a 10- min ride to start with). I would have thought they had GPS!
I get to the hospital, get taken up to L&D immediately, and they are busy in there. To the point where I got the last room available, and it was the room where everything was taken from to re-stock the other rooms. Oh well. So once I get there F shows up, the CSO followed me over just to get my statement JUST IN CASE I had the baby or something. Yeah right, I had a hair appointment that afternoon that I wanted to get to! The Dr on call was awesome, she was one I had seen before and I loved her. If I didn't like my own Dr so much, I would totally switch to start seeing her. They hooked me up on some monitors just to check things out. Now, keep in mind, I had been 2cm dilated and having contractions for a week + at this point, so having contractions was normal, and they weren't painful, so I didn't think anything of it. After a few hours, they were getting ready to send me home (still having contractions, but nothing regular, and they needed the room for someone ACTUALLY in labor. So, as they are getting ready to do that the Dr looked at the monitors one last time and noticed I was having contractions every 2 minutes. SAY WHAT?!?! It didn't feel any worse than normal, and actually I wasn't really feeling them. So, she decided to check me to see if I was dilated. Um, I had been dilated for a WEEK! She just looked at me and smiled and was like "You, my dear, are in labor and are having this baby today!" I totally broke down and started crying. I sooo wasn't ready. I wanted at least until the end of the week, not to mention that hair appointment! So she checked me and I was 3 cm and my water was about to break at any point. How is this possible that I don't even feel any different than I had for the last week? She told me she would give me a little time to adjust to the idea of having this baby that day and would be back. I needed that time. Then she checked me an hour later and I was 4cm, and 10 minutes after I was 5cm and she broke my water. At that point I asked for the epidural (they had a TON of C-sections scheduled for that day and who knows when I would be able to get it otherwise).
The Dr told us to start calling whoever we needed to. I didn't have my hospital bags with me, so we needed those, and we needed to call family. F's mom had about a 2.5-3 hour drive to come down. We asked the Dr how long she thought we might have. She said at this rate, F's mom might miss it all, she didn't expect my labor to take more than 3 hours. This is definitely not what I had expected. My mom had a crazy long labor with me, and this is my first baby. How am I having this baby in 5 hours from start to finish? This is crazy! So we started making the phone calls and everyone thought we were joking. No joke! The Anesthesiologist came in and gave me my epidural. I swear they are evil people, they like putting people to sleep and that epidural was PAINFUL! So, we hang out for a little bit and things immediately slow down drastically. So, they start the pitocin. After that things definitely picked up and I was feeling a LOT of pressure. I finally was at 7cm when the nurse checked me, and was going to have them top off my epidural. She checked the baby and thought he might be facing a different way or something, but otherwise everything looked good. I got my epidural topped off, and was STILL feeling a LOT of pressure and wasn't able to sleep. It was now about 4:30 or so and I still hadn't slept since 2 the afternoon before. I asked my mom to call F and have him come back from the cafeteria with his mom and grandma (who had made it in time). The Dr came in and checked me, and said I was 9.5cm dilated....and then she said...."That's not a head! we have a scrotum" SAY WHAT?!?!?!
My baby was breech. Not only was he breech, but the breech position was "Frank Breech" meaning butt first. Figures it would be called that. After all, in our child birth prep class, that was the one breech position that they didn't talk about, and I looked at F and said "figures you would have the same name as the breech position that is butt first!". I could not stop laughing as they got me ready to go to the operating room. What else could happen? Seriously? A car accident, going into labor, and now having to have an emergency C-Section. So off we went to the operating room, and F got all suited up in his painters jump suit (that's what it looked like), they prepped me, and had some good 80's hair bands playing on the radio in the operating room (yay, so I didn't have to really hear what was going on). My Dr was getting really frustrated because they had to deliver this baby NOW before he came on his own, and were paging the pediatrician constantly. Finally the pediatrician showed up, and it was on with the show. F asked the anesthesiologist if he could stand up and watch, and was told "hey, this is your show, have at it" so he watched the whole thing. I just remember a lot of tugging and pulling, and then hearing them say "here he is!" and then heard a small cry. The best sound in the world! I don't remember a whole lot after that except for the brief second that F brought our son over so I could see him, and then don't remember anything until we got to the recovery room.
F brought our son in, so I could officially meet him...our nameless son. He had lots of hair, and the longest fingers and toes I had ever seen on a baby. I was told he was 7lbs 6oz and 17 inches long...or at least that was their best guess since he was breech and his legs were up around his ears and they couldn't straighten them completely to get a good measurement. I got to hold him and try and start feeding him. The whole day was absolutely surreal. We finally got settled in our room, had a few visitors, and then were finally able to get a little rest.
We spent a total of 4 days in the hospital, and the nurses were fabulous (with the exception of a few that I luckily didn't need to spend much time with). Our poor baby didn't have a name until the morning of day 3, so until then we had lots of people calling him Crash (as a nod to my little fender bender that pushed me into labor). Huge thanks to everyone that stopped by to visit and sent their well wishes. I know we have been MIA for awhile, but we are learning our way together, not to mention the recovery from the c-section has been a lot rougher than I would have liked.
So, without further adieu, I would like to formally introduce Francis David...AKA Crash...or F3 depending on who you ask.
More pictures coming soon...I promise!

What a beautiful story! And quite and entrance. Congrats!! --Alison (MyABCLife)
